Understanding Sri Lanka's two weather seasons

Sri Lanka is a small island but it sits at the meeting point of two distinct monsoon systems. The south-west monsoon, known locally as Yala, affects the south and west coasts between May and September. The north-east monsoon, known as Maha, affects the north and east coasts between October and January.

This means that while the west coast is wet in June, the east coast is dry and sunny. And while the east coast is being hit by rain in November, Galle and Mirissa on the south coast are at their best. The Cultural Triangle in the centre and the Hill Country around Ella sit between the two systems and are relatively manageable year-round, with the worst months being October and November when both monsoons overlap briefly.

December, January and February

The best months to visit Sri Lanka for most travellers. The south and west coasts are dry, warm and at their most beautiful. Galle Fort, Mirissa beach and the southern safari parks are all in peak condition. The Cultural Triangle—Sigiriya, Kandy and Dambulla—is excellent. Whale watching season is in full swing at Mirissa from November through April. Temperatures sit between 28 and 32 degrees on the coast.

This is peak season, so accommodation books up quickly, particularly at boutique properties. Book at least 10 to 12 weeks ahead for December and January travel.

March and April

Still excellent for the south and west. March is one of the driest months of the year. April brings the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid-April, a colourful celebration worth experiencing if your dates align. Temperatures begin to climb toward 33 to 35 degrees on the coast.

The Hill Country around Ella and Nuwara Eliya is lush and relatively cool. Yala National Park is still productive before the dry season concentrates wildlife around waterholes from May onwards.

May and June

The south-west monsoon arrives, bringing rain to the west coast, Colombo and the Hill Country. This does not mean constant rain, but afternoon showers are common and the sea can be rough for swimming on the south coast.

However, the east coast opens up: Arugam Bay begins its surf season, Trincomalee beaches are at their best and the north becomes accessible. Yala is still good and the Cultural Triangle sees little change. Prices drop noticeably and the most popular sites are quieter.

July and August

Peak season for the east coast and excellent for the Hill Country. Ella, Nuwara Eliya and the tea country are cool, green and at their most photogenic. Arugam Bay is one of Asia's best surf destinations in July and August. The south coast has some rain, but Yala remains open and productive.

UK school summer holidays fall here, making this the busiest period for families travelling from Britain.

September and October

A shoulder season where both monsoons overlap briefly in October. September is manageable, particularly for the north, east and Cultural Triangle. October is the trickiest month, with the highest chance of rain across multiple regions simultaneously.

Prices are at their lowest and the island is at its quietest. For travellers who do not mind the possibility of afternoon rain, October offers outstanding value and empty temples.

November

The north-east monsoon begins to arrive on the east coast, but the south and west start to dry out again. November is a transitional month that suits the Cultural Triangle, Kandy and a Yala safari well. The south coast beaches begin to recover from the south-west monsoon.

Whale watching at Mirissa restarts in November and the season runs through April. It is a good month for travellers who want lower prices and are flexible about beach days.

For families travelling from the UK, the peak holiday windows fall in December and January for Christmas and New Year, March and April for Easter, and July and August for summer. December to January aligns perfectly with Sri Lanka's best weather season for the main circuit. July and August suit an east coast or Hill Country focused route well. Easter in March and April is excellent for the full south coast circuit.

Book 10 to 12 weeks ahead for Christmas and Easter travel as the best boutique properties fill quickly. Summer school holiday travel in July and August has more flexibility and lower prices.
