Climate, monsoons and monthly conditions
Sri Lanka's two monsoons affect opposite coasts at different times. Understand which coast is dry when and plan your private tour around the best conditions for your dates.
Sri Lanka sits in the Indian Ocean just below the equator, giving it a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round. The coast averages 28 to 33 degrees throughout the year. The Hill Country around Ella and Nuwara Eliya sits at altitude and is noticeably cooler, ranging from 15 to 25 degrees depending on the time of year.
The island is divided into two distinct weather zones by its central mountain range. The south-west monsoon brings rain to the south and west coasts from May to September. The north-east monsoon brings rain to the north and east coasts from October to January. The Cultural Triangle and central regions sit in the rain shadow and experience more moderate, year-round conditions.
This is why the answer to “what is the weather like in Sri Lanka?” depends entirely on which part of the island you are asking about and when you are going.
Conditions through the year
Seasonal patterns vary by coast, but these six periods give a clear overview for planning.
Dry and sunny on the south and west coasts. Temperatures are 28 to 32 degrees at the coast and 15 to 20 degrees in the Hill Country. Sea conditions are calm and ideal for swimming and whale watching at Mirissa.
This is the most popular period and the best overall weather for the standard private tour circuit. The Best of Ceylon and Classic Tour packages are at their best.
Conditions remain dry on the south and west coast through March. April sees temperatures rise slightly, and the Sinhala New Year celebrations in mid-month add cultural interest.
Still excellent for the full circuit, including Yala, Galle and the Hill Country. It is one of the best periods for the Heritage Tour in the Cultural Triangle.
The south-west monsoon arrives on the west and south coasts. The east coast—Trincomalee and Arugam Bay—opens into its dry season. Afternoon showers are common in Colombo and Galle, but the Cultural Triangle and Hill Country remain largely unaffected. Yala is still excellent, with fewer tourists and lower prices.
The North and East Expedition Tour is at its best from May onwards.
Ella and Nuwara Eliya are lush, cool and spectacular. The east coast is in full dry season. Colombo and the west coast are wetter but not unmanageable. UK school summer holidays make this period popular for families.
The Adventure Tour works particularly well, with white-water rafting at Kitulgala and surfing at Arugam Bay both in peak condition.
September is manageable for the north and east. October is the most difficult month overall, as both monsoons overlap briefly and rain can affect multiple regions simultaneously. It is also the quietest period, with the lowest prices.

The south and west coasts begin to dry out while the north-east monsoon arrives on the east coast. Whale watching at Mirissa restarts. It is a good month for Yala, the Cultural Triangle and Galle, with shoulder-season prices.
The Udawalawe National Park Safari Tour is excellent year-round, including November.

Coast, cities and hills
The coast stays warm throughout the year, while elevation makes the Hill Country noticeably cooler.

A comfortable average in the hills, with cooler mornings and evenings.
At 1,000 metres, evenings can feel cool—particularly from June to September.
Sea temperatures average 27 to 29 degrees year-round on the south coast. Swimming is comfortable in the dry season, but the sea can be rough and unsafe during the south-west monsoon from May to September. Pack a light layer for Hill Country evenings in every season.
A flexible route
The key to a great trip in any month is routing around the monsoon. A private tour makes this straightforward because we design the route around your travel dates from the start. If you are travelling in June, for example, we front-load the Cultural Triangle and Hill Country while the east coast opens up, and avoid south-coast beach days until conditions improve at the end of a longer trip.

December is one of the best months. The south and west coasts are dry and sunny with temperatures around 30 degrees. The Cultural Triangle and Kandy are excellent. It is peak season, so book accommodation early.
November is transitional. The south coast is recovering from the south-west monsoon and improving steadily. The Cultural Triangle is good. Yala and Udawalawe safaris are productive. The east coast is entering its wet season. Prices are lower than peak season and the island is noticeably quieter.
Rainfall is heavily dependent on location and time of year. During the south-west monsoon from May to September, the west and south coasts receive significant rainfall but the east coast and Cultural Triangle are largely unaffected. During the north-east monsoon from October to January, the east coast is wet while the south is dry.
The coast is consistently warm at 28 to 33 degrees throughout the year. The Hill Country around Ella and Nuwara Eliya is cooler, averaging 15 to 22 degrees, and can feel genuinely cold in the evenings from June to September.
Pack light cotton clothing for the coast, a light waterproof or poncho for afternoon showers during monsoon months, and a warm layer for Hill Country evenings. Sunscreen and a hat are essential year-round.
